It should be very clear that waves is a total different thing than an particle. We can say wave is transfer of energy from one place to an other place without movement of mass.
For example
1. waves in ocea.We know that they carry energy thats why they can produce devastating effects on beach but water is not leaving its place after releasing energy it is coming back.
2. Sound waves they also carry energy but mass is ot beig transferred from one point to others.
Now lets come to our main topic " Properties of Waves"
There are FIVE major properties of waves
(i) Amplitude
the height of the wave is called its amplitude. Usually it is measured in meters.
(ii) Wavelength
the distance between adjacent crests or troughs is called its wavelength. It is also usually measured in meters.
(iii) Period
the time it takes for one complete wave to pass a given point, measured in seconds.
(iv) Frequecy
the number of complete waves that pass a point in one second, measured in inverse seconds, or Hertz (Hz).
(v) Speed
the horizontal speed of a point on a wave as it propagates, measured in meters / second.
Not all of these properties are independent; one has the relations
- Period = 1 / frequency
- Speed = wavelength / period = wavelength x frequency
